Nanaimo Animal Control Services

The animal control service contracted by the City of Nanaimo, and the number the City itself publishes for a lost or found dog — including after hours.

What to do here

Call 250-616-0233. That is the number the City of Nanaimo publishes for both a lost dog and a found dog, and the City says to use it after hours too, listening to the recorded message for instructions. It is a contracted service rather than a city department, so the phone is the route in.

Ask two questions on that call, because the City does not answer them in writing: where the animal would be held, and whether the service handles cats. The City's page is titled "Lost or Found Dogs" and sits under dog licences, and it names no pound facility or address — so do not assume a cat is in municipal care, and do not assume the local BC SPCA branch is the city pound either. While you are on the phone, ask what proof of ownership to bring.

One easy mistake to avoid: if your pet went missing outside the city boundary, in the Regional District of Nanaimo, the City directs you to Coast Animal Services on 1-888-754-1397 instead.

Compiled from the City of Nanaimo's own lost or found dogs page, re-fetched 4 October 2026. Needs review: the City publishes the contractor's phone number but does not name or locate a pound facility, and says nothing about cats, so neither is stated here. Last checked 4 October 2026. Details change without notice — confirm anything you are about to rely on.

One organisation is never the whole search

A pet is found by whoever happens to be nearby, so the shelter, the city, the registry and the local search groups each hold a different piece. Work the list rather than one entry on it.
