City of Barrie Enforcement Services (animal control)

The City of Barrie branch that holds animal control: it takes the report, picks up a dog running at large and impounds animals under the Animal Control By-law. The City does not publish where an impounded animal is held, so ask on the call.

What to do here

Start here rather than at a shelter: the City states that Animal Control Services for its Enforcement Services branch responds to complaints for pets running at large and responds 24 hours a day to injured or sick animals in need of veterinary care on its roads. The branch is at 45 Cedar Pointe Drive and takes reports on 705-739-4241 or [email protected]; the City warns that callers may need to leave a message, so leave a full description and your number.

Ask one specific question on that call: where is the animal being held. Barrie's Animal Control By-law 2010-035 establishes a Pound under a "Poundkeeper" — which the by-law defines as whichever person, service or agency Council designates or appoints — and gives the owner three days, excluding statutory holidays and Sundays, to redeem a dog from the pound. But no current City page names the Poundkeeper or gives a pound address, so we do not name one here either. Get it from Enforcement Services and go straight there, because the redemption window is short.

Registration is what shortens the whole process. The City says a registered pet gets one free ride home if it strays and is retrieved by Animal Services, immediate contact if it is injured and being taken to a vet, and lets anyone who finds it call Animal Services to have it identified. Dog registration is mandatory in Barrie and cat registration is optional, the fee covers the pet's lifetime, and the City's 2026 Fees By-law sets impounding at $62.05 for a first occurrence plus $12.40 per day maintenance, with an $83.68 Animal Control Service Fee. Species changes the service: officers have a duty to impound a dog running at large, while for a cat a resident may capture and contain it for delivery to an officer, who may then impound it.

Compiled from the City of Barrie's own by-law enforcement and pet registration pages, its Animal Control By-law 2010-035 office consolidation and Schedule B of its 2026 Fees By-law, all re-fetched 4 October 2026. WHO RUNS BARRIE'S POUND IS DELIBERATELY NOT STATED. The by-law proves a Pound and a Council-appointed Poundkeeper exist but never names them, and no live barrie.ca page does either — the City's sitemap carries only law-enforcement, animal-control-law and pet-registration pages and none mentions a pound. The only statements naming an operator are the Ontario SPCA's own, from 2022 ("The Ontario SPCA Barrie Animal Centre is currently granted the pound contracts for both DOGS & CATS for the city of Barrie"), and that page is gone from its current Barrie site, whose FAQ now asks finders to contact the municipality's animal control first. Four years is too old to publish as today's answer, so ask Enforcement Services where an impounded animal is held. Last checked 4 October 2026. Details change without notice — confirm anything you are about to rely on.

One organisation is never the whole search

A pet is found by whoever happens to be nearby, so the shelter, the city, the registry and the local search groups each hold a different piece. Work the list rather than one entry on it.
