FVRD Community Animal Response & Education (CARE) Centre

The Fraser Valley Regional District runs animal control and the dog pound for Abbotsford, Chilliwack and three smaller communities. Its CARE Centre on Wolfe Road in Chilliwack is where a stray dog from any of them is held — and the FVRD states it cannot impound cats.

What to do here

For a lost DOG in Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Harrison Hot Springs, Kent or Mission, this is the first call rather than a local SPCA branch. The FVRD — not the city — holds the animal control service for all five, and its own FAQ answers "who do I call if my dog is lost" with this number. Have the licence tag number ready: the FVRD says a licensed dog that is picked up can be returned home quickly.

For a lost CAT this is the wrong number, and the FVRD says so itself: the CARE Centre is not equipped to impound cats and the FVRD's animal control bylaw does not regulate them, so it refers cat owners to the BC SPCA or a local humane centre. In the Fraser Valley the answer genuinely depends on the species.

Note the hours. Animal control here runs Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 5:00pm, and is closed on statutory holidays — if a dog goes missing on a Sunday there is no same-day pickup, so canvass the neighbourhood and post locally in the meantime. Call 911 instead if a dog attack is in progress.

Compiled from the FVRD's own animal control, CARE Centre and FAQ pages, re-fetched 4 October 2026. The street number is deliberately omitted: the CARE Centre page gives 44860 Wolfe Road and the FAQ gives 44820 Wolfe Road, so confirm the address by phone before driving out. Last checked 4 October 2026. Details change without notice — confirm anything you are about to rely on.

One organisation is never the whole search

A pet is found by whoever happens to be nearby, so the shelter, the city, the registry and the local search groups each hold a different piece. Work the list rather than one entry on it.
