PAWR’s animal-control officers hold the Municipality of Chatham-Kent’s contract, so a stray picked up in Chatham-Kent lands here. Check the Found Cats and Found Dogs pages and call 226-996-9969. Strays are held three days, not counting the day they arrive. An after-hours number is published for a dog at large or a dog bite.
Dogs and cats are handled differently, and this is the thing to know. PAWR states that its contract with the municipality does not include picking up stray cats — it offers humane trap rentals with a deposit instead, and gives free intake for stray cats brought to the shelter. A found cat goes to the Chatham location at 405 Park Avenue. A found dog can go to either shelter, or call and PAWR will collect.
The municipal by-law matches: its at-large rule covers “dogs or other animals, other than cats”. Chatham-Kent also requires every dog to wear a licence tag, and caps households at three dogs and — in urban areas — five cats.
