What to do here

The City of Peterborough’s own Animal Services page states that the Peterborough Humane Society provides our community with Animal Control Officers, an animal shelter, and an adoption centre — so this is the first call for a stray in the city, not just a nearby shelter.

Unusually for Ontario, no cats carve-out is published here: the City says injured stray dogs and cats can both be reported to this society’s Animal Services Department on 705-745-4722.

Call and ask whether any animal matching your description has been brought in, including ones not yet listed online.

Two things the City keeps elsewhere: cruelty and neglect go to the provincial Animal Protection Call Centre on 1-833-926-4625, and a dead animal on a road is City Public Works on 705-745-1386, answered 24/7. Whether this service extends across Peterborough County is not stated on the City’s page — ask when you call.

One organisation is never the whole search

A pet is found by whoever happens to be nearby, so the shelter, the city, the registry and the local search groups each hold a different piece. Work the list rather than one entry on it.
