Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter

The City of Greater Sudbury's own animal shelter — where a dog or cat found injured, abandoned or roaming at large in the city is held. It is at a temporary address while a permanent shelter is built, so phone before you travel.

What to do here

This is the city shelter, not a charity, and the City is explicit about what it holds: the Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter "provides a temporary home for dogs and cats found injured, abandoned or roaming at large in our community" and its goal is to reunite them with their owners. Both species follow the same path here, so call 705-694-7387 for a missing dog or a missing cat and check the City's found-pets and deceased-pets listings.

Check the address before you drive. The City states that effective 31 July 2026 the shelter temporarily relocated to the former Copper Cliff Fire Hall at 35 Godfrey Dr. in Copper Cliff, while work continues toward a new permanent shelter — so an older address or map pin may send you to the wrong building. Appointments are required for adoptions, and the shelter is closed to the public on statutory holidays.

Reporting is a different number from the shelter. To report an injured or potentially dangerous cat or dog roaming at large, or a dead animal on a municipal road, the City asks you to dial 311; after hours, call 311 then press 6 for its call-answer service. By-law Compliance and Enforcement, also reached through 311, handles roaming pets and other Animal Control By-law concerns. The Ontario SPCA Greater Sudbury Animal Centre is a separate organisation and is listed separately.

Compiled from the City of Greater Sudbury's own animal shelter, contact animal services and lost-and-found pets pages, all re-fetched 4 October 2026, on which day the City still published the temporary Copper Cliff address. The address is temporary by the City's own statement and may change again — phone before travelling. No hold period is published here because the City does not state one; ask on the call. Last checked 4 October 2026. Details change without notice — confirm anything you are about to rely on.

One organisation is never the whole search

A pet is found by whoever happens to be nearby, so the shelter, the city, the registry and the local search groups each hold a different piece. Work the list rather than one entry on it.
